Getting a Passport 101

1.       Get two passport photos at the Ankeny Walgreens for $7.99.  Or, you may have passport photos taken at another location, but make sure that each of the two pictures will fit within the box on the passport application.

2.       Go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html for information about getting a passport.  You may download the passport application from the website.  Or, you may pick up an application at the Ankeny Post Office, 1101 N. Ankeny Boulevard (515) 964-0464.  Bravo!  Since summer 2006, the Ankeny Post Office now offers passport processing from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  No more trips to the Central Post Office in Des Moines!  Bravo!

3.       Complete the application, but do not sign it until witnessed by a postal official.

4.       With the completed application, go to the Ankeny Post Office (M-F 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) for processing.  Please provide the following:

a.  Proof of U.S. citizenship (Social Security number)

b.  Proof of identity

c.  Two recent color photographs (Walgreens $7.99)

d.  Fees:  Age 16 and older, $75 + $25 processing fee, valid 10 years.  Under age 16, $60 + $25 processing fee, valid only 5 years.   If possible, wait until you turn 16 to order your passport.

e.  BOTH PARENTS must sign the application at the counter with you if you are under 16.

5.          Processing takes about four weeks from the time of the receipt of the application.  Don’t wait until the last minute!
